Another picture was nominated for Most Unexplainable, mostly because of my outfit.

Freelance Whales & Shout Out Louds

Last night Justin invited me to see the Freelance Whales, who were opening for Shout Out Louds at The Church. Like usual, walking into the basement was like walking into a pool of airborne sweat, but the show was great. I am desperately in love with the girl in this band. She was the bass with one hand while playing bells in the other.

My life is so totally complete. Some kid tried to buy it off me so he could give it to his ex-girlfriend. I told him to get over it. Mount Eerie was good. Getting cocktails around the corner with Brett between each act was better.

Hurt by Johnny Cash

Considered by many to be his epitaph, if this doesn’t make you cry, you’re a jerk.

Said The Whale

Those silly kids at 3am Design just finished up a music video for Said The Whale. It’s substantially adorable. I can’t decide if my favorite part is the cloud shapes or the pretty hair texture. I made his rock seat in the cave.

Open Mic

Tiger By The Tail: Studio | Live
I’ll Give You Love: Studio | Live
Ruby Tuesday: Studio | Live

My dad and I practiced some songs in our living room (aka the studio) and we took our show on the road to his weekly open mic at Jospeph’s Grill in Langhorne. We pretty much tore the house down. We picked up a saxophone player to accompany us and my dad and I danced and shimmied and knocked over microphone stands (a lot). I learned that even when you screw up the harmony to every verse, if you dancing, catch microphones, and make adorable faces, the crowd loves you anyway. My Mommom was there, which was awesome. Ruby Tuesday Live is the most fun, I think. Generally speaking, we rule the world.

Friends of Bellewoods
August 30th, 2009

Tranzac was hosting an all day show with a huge line up. We went at one to catch The Great Bloomers, which was super fantastic. Then we came back in the evening and caught Bellewoods- who blew my entire mind. I love when you see a new band in concert and they make you thing deep intense thoughts their whole set until you realize you are scowling because you are so over come with emotional connecting. Then we were treated to the musical stylings of Lisa Bozikovic, which was really interesting. She finished with a cover song that consisted of her swaying under the pressure of an accordion singing “teacher teacher sexy creature”, therein proving that she is the kind of girl everyone in that room wants to marry. Lastly I got to see Emma McKenna again. She is a really talented girl who lives in my neighborhood and she writes excellent lyrics.

Here is a zip of what I am calling the Toronto Indie Music Sampler. I’ll leave it up for about a week.

bands at sneaks

Tonight I met up with a couple peeps at Sneaky Dee’s to see a few bands. The first band was really awesome, but we went downstairs halfway through their set to get nachos. The second and third act were frustratingly horrible and not really my thing, respectively. Oddly enough, I ran into one of my THUG friends, which was sort of funny.

The show was a lot of fun. It was at the Phoenix Concert Theatre, which seems like a pretty ragey rock establishment most of the time. Tonight, however, it was full of high schoolers. But that’s okay, because they were jumpers. The entire crowd was jumping and dancing, which freaked me out a little (too many indie shows?), but it was totally awesome. I’ve never jumped before. Sleepyhead, as always, made my entire life. It was one of those concert moments where people just go crazy and your smile is splitting your face open and it’s just really really great. Though, on a slightly immature note, it was a little ridiculous watching that high pitched chipmunk voice come out of that very hairy man. And also, keyboardist are hot.

This is a picture of the bar after the band spontaneously suggested a smoke break during their set for everyone present. Denise, myself, and the trashed guy on the couch were the only people there not friends with the band. They were pretty funny though. When they forgot the words to their songs, the piano player would take an “inappropriate piano solo” and the singer would call out things like Bennie and the Jets for him to weave into the melody.
