Pasta Nera

In Venice, I ate a lot of food. A lot of it was pastry, but the winner was probably this amazing dish of squid ink pasta typical of the region. I got this spaghetti nero di seppia from Rosticceria Gislon, a counter-service diner-style restaurant just off the Rialto Bridge. It was packed with tourists and locals alike because the food is good and the price is right. I couldn’t find any squid ink packaged in the supermarket to take home with me, because chefs here buy the squid with it’s ink sack from the daily fish markets.

Venice: Morning in the Fog

Venice: Riding the Traghetti

My absolute favorite part of Venice was riding on the traghetti, which means ferry. They are gondola-like boats used to cross the canals directly. The ride only lasts a few short minutes, but it was exhilarating every time.

San Marco Square and the Doge Palace constitute the center of Venetian tourism. By midday the place is mobbed with people, but I had the good fortune of seeing it bright and early.

San Benedetto is a beach town near Rotella. When I say that Italy is empty of people during August, I mean that they have evacuated all the major cities and parked their extremely tanned asses at beach towns like these.

Italy: Porco Festival

The reason we came to Italy in the middle of August, a month where everything is closed for summer and it’s hot as hell, was because we wanted to attend Rotella’s Porco Festival. It’s a three day festival celebrating pork in all it’s forms. The entire town comes together to put on this festival which attracts huge crowds for such a tiny village.
